Artistic Statement

The Creative Method

Javier Ortas paints solely from imagination. He works facing the blank paper, without using any model or visual reference. His art is one hundred per cent imagined.

He learned to paint in Madrid during his childhood, and it was in the United States, during his early youth, where he realised that he could only be a painter and that this was the meaning of his life. After years of dedication to drawing, with special focus on imagined drawing, he specialised in watercolour and in 2010 created his own language, a style that allows him to create without limits, experiment, and consolidate his path in art. Since then, he has held 42 solo exhibitions and has participated in more than 100 group shows, with a presence in major Spanish galleries in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, León, Pamplona, Toledo, Zamora, and A Coruña, as well as outside Spain in Italy, the Netherlands, and France. His work is held in collections in the United States, Belgium, Italy, France, Canada, South Korea, and Mexico, among others. He has been represented by galleries such as Herraiz Gallery in Madrid for 12 years and Grup D'art Escolá in Barcelona for 8 years. He has been selected 9 times for the Reina Sofía Prize and 11 consecutive times for the Autumn Salon of the AEPE, where he has won 5 awards, and has also received accolades such as from Anthology Magazine in Ireland and the first prize at the Artemisia Watercolour Competition.
